A fast response draw to encourage supporters to return their ticket stubs within 2 weeks of mailing took place at the hospice recently and ten lucky tickets were pulled out, each winning a £10 M&S voucher. The tickets, which cost £1 each, were then placed back into the raffle in time for the main draw which will take place at the hospice on Monday 21st May. With many GP practices due to close from 6.00pm Friday 4th May until they re-open on Tuesday 8th May, it is important everyone knows the most appropriate place to go if they feel unwell: Self care – every day illnesses like a headache, hangover, sore throat or cough can be treated at home by using over-the-counter medicines. Following the Government’s new planning framework offers hope for group campaigning against Greenfield housing development. The Government’s new planning laws announced on 27th March give an element of protection to non-green belt countryside. The National Planning Policy Framework, NPPF, recognises ‘the intrinsic value and beauty’ of the wider countryside. Owen Bentley, Chairman of Barkby and Barkby Thorpe Parishes Action Group, BABTAG, welcomes this protection which was absent in previous drafts of the NPPF saying “Leicestershire has no green belt land so our countryside is much more vulnerable to developers. Now local planners will have to have regard for our beautiful and productive countryside when considering the location of new housing estates”. BABTAG is fighting proposals for a new town of 5000 houses on farmland land east of Thurmaston and north of Hamilton. Charnwood Borough Council is now expected to decide its scale and size or its abandonment in September. BABTAG also welcomes the stipulation that Brownfield should usually be developed before Greenfield sites and town centres before out of town sites and that “the presumption in favour of development” is now hedged in with new conditions which should deter opportunistic planning applications. ...
